Happy Birthday, Benedict!

It has been an amazing year to be a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch (see Oscar Nomination), but for me this year has been especially amazing because my Birthday Wishes for him from the last several years have come true.  Benedict's 38th has all been about:

And then his biggest wish came true:
"Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son."

Congrats to Benedict, Sophie, and Baby Batch :) on a banner year!
Cheers to 39!

Annnd this year, a wish of mine is actually coming true.
Recently, one of my closest friends won a pair of tickets to see Lyndsey Turner's Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch!!!
She graciously invited me to come with her, I couldn't say no, we've booked a flat near Hampstead Heath for 4 nights, and, as of yesterday, I have a ticket to London.
Sooo... in just about 6 weeks, I'll be at the Barbican seeing him perform live.
And I can. not. freaking. believe. it!
Can you say "trip of a lifetime"?
More anticipation and news forthcoming, but for today:
Happy Birthday, Benedict! And see you later :)

Fangirl, meet Fanboy

One of the things my boyfriend and I marvel at most is how many things - specifically stories - we're mutually passionate about and how they led us to meet and get to know one another.  There have been several moments where I just have to shake my head and smile at how much fun it is to appreciate stories together.  So I thought I'd share a few of those moments.

(Key: S=me, M=him)

The day after we met, he was perusing my blog...
S: Oh, I apologize in advance, there's a LOT of stuff on my blog about Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston, because I'm a huge fan of them both.
M: Well... how could you not be?

Discussing "important life questions," such as, favorite Avenger?
S: Can I choose Loki?
M: *smiles* Samara, I'm so glad you're a Loki girl rather than a Thor girl...  Deeply dynamic, understandably pained characters like Loki are precious to good stories, for them to last with you.

We were chatting with some of my family and...
M: I just love Patrick Stewart.  I met him at Comic Con last year.  Patrick Stewart is my [gestures to me] Benedict Cumberbatch.

On our first official date, we arrived at the restaurant early. So he pulls out one of his flutes and plays me "Concerning Hobbits" - from memory.

During the craze of the Ice Bucket Challenge...
S: Ooh! Benedict did the Ice Bucket Challenge :)
M: [watches] Haha - has Hiddleston done one yet??
S: Yes! [sends it to him]
M: Brilliant!

He is a wonderful Trekkie, and also a huge fan of lions. The other day I find this on FB.
M: Lion's log stardate 08271.4: I have encountered a new and intriguing life form called the Beautiful Girlfriend. My investigation may require all my attention.

We read one of Matt's favorite books and now we're reading one of mine, Pride & Prejudice. It is completely new to him & he is "flipping loving it." Last night he was live-texting me his reaction to Darcy's proposal at Hunsford. Below are snippets of our conversation:
M: [Sends a photo of the "In vain I have struggled…" line] Wut. :D Like, wow!!! Yes!! C:
S: Hehe, Matt are you developing a mancrush on Darcy? It's totally ok...I won't be jealous!
M: I mean I... Well, yes, in fact I'm quite over Wickham and have put on my Team Darcy t-shirt...
[a few minutes later]
M: Shut. Down!
S: Looks like someone ain't Team Darcy
M: Not in the least...
[a few more minutes]
M: Oh my gosh that was the best fight I've ever read.

These are just a few of many moments where I've been really thankful to be in a relationship with this Fanboy :)

Adaptation Week: Mansfield Park

The winner of the Wait and Hope 1000 Giveaway is my good friend and fellow blogger: Cami!  Congrats, Cami, and thanks for everyone who entered.

* * * * * * * * *

Anyone who chats to me long enough is bound to discover I love adaptations.  I simply love classic stories retold well.  Adaptations serve to introduce some to a story for the first time, others get to relive it and rethink their prior assumptions.  What's more, they often prompt great discussion about characters, plot points, and the way in which we understand a narrative. Being that I love adaptation so much, I thought I'd take this week on my blog to hi-light a different adaptation that is new or currently going on.  So, welcome to Adaptation Week!

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, the BBC is re-airing a radio drama they recorded initially in 2003.  That's right, before Tennant flew the TARDIS, before Felicity Jones played Northanger Abbey's gullible heroine, and far before Cumberbatch sleuthed in a long overcoat - they all were in a production of Austen's third novel.  Mansfield Park is interesting in that it is the author's most controversial novel as it can be read as exceedingly moralistic or covertly subvertive.  Due to the fact that she sits in the canon between Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse, Fanny Price seems a frail and prudish heroine by comparison - but, this of course depends on how she and the novel is interpreted.

The BBC will be airing 10, 15-minute episodes beginning today, May 12.  You can listen to these episodes within a week of their airing via iPlayer Radio.  The stellar cast includes:

Fanny Price: Felicity Jones
Sir Thomas Bertram: Tim Pigott-Smith
Lady Bertram: Liza Sadovy
Tom Bertram: David Tennant
Edmund Bertram: Benedict Cumberbatch
Maria Bertram: Kate Fleetwood
Mrs. Norris: Julia McKenzie
Mr. Rushworth: Toby Jones
Henry Crawford: James Callis
Mary Crawford: Susan Lynch
Narrator: Amanda Root

Q&A with Tom Hiddleston

Last weekend I saw Coriolanus with some ladies, and ever since has been "Tom Hiddleston Appreciation Week."  I know I've mentioned him before, but I've realized some people don't know much about him. Well, let's just say he's a lovely old soul who has still retained a child's playfulness.  And is at the same time devilishly handsome!

Last fall, he did a Twitter Q&A and I loved some of his answers, so here are some quotes, pictures and videos of his for your enjoyment.

[My favorite poem...]
He recites the beginning in this photo shoot & interview:

[My favorite Disney film as a child...]
He once broke into the "Bare Necessities" impromptu:

[Hiddleston reading to his Thor teddy bear]
[Hiddleston with Quvenzhane Wallis at the MTV Movie Awards 2013]

[Prince Hal to Henry V - from PBS's The Hollow Crown]

[Hiddleston as F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris]

And remember...

Probably more to come on that, but it's safe to say that I think Hiddleston is pretty fantastic.

Funniest thing you'll watch today:
Jack Bauer presenting Sherlock Holmes with an award and, per usual, "he forgets his pants*."

*American transliteration of "pants" ;)

Cumberbatch for the National Theatre

So... the National Theatre of Great Britain celebrated their landmark 50th Anniversary tonight, bringing over 100 performers together for a live evening comprised of some of their most famous productions.

Below is Benedict Cumberbatch Kobna Holdbrook-Smith performing a short scene from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard.  Enjoy!

Benedict Cumberbatch: Fifth Estate Premier at TIFF

As previously mentioned on the blog... Benedict Cumberbatch is currently in Toronto promoting The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave, and August: Osage County.  Of the latter two, he claims to be just a "small proud cog,"  but last night at The Fifth Estate premier, he was the star.  Earlier in the day, it was announced he would be awarded "British Artist of the Year" at the LA BAFTA's.  With 3 high profile films at TIFF, exciting casting news (including Star Wars rumors), award buzz, and even despite having to jet off before the August premier to start his next film--he was heralded last night as the "it" man of this year's festival.
So when he arrived with his post-Sherlock hair cut, donning a (presumably, Spencer Hart) bow-tied tuxedo, the cameras were ready.  These are just a few fun shots from last night's premier and this morning's Fifth Estate press conference (which you can catch here).

[Classy]

[He's come a long way to get to this red carpet]

[glamor shot]

[Still seems a bit overwhelmed on the red carpet]

[but he adores his fans... and we adore him]

[With director and co-stars - including Dan Stevens!]

[Fantastic suit and tie for the press conference]

["Oh, you like my new hair?"]

[ha! dorky smile]

[Truly, fabulous tie]

Another few fun bits:

Photos and accounts of the afterparty - where Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Steve McQueen, Colin Hanks, and Juno Temple showed up.

And oh Buzzfeed!

This fall there will be several more premiers and fun times... but yesterday was a brilliant day for the Cumber-collective.

Restraint

I just want you all to be proud of me because:

I will be in Boston till September 3rd

Benedict Cumberbatch is in Toronto September 5th to walk the red carpet at the opening night of TIFF.  Three of his four fall films are premiering there - including The Fifth Estate which is headlining their opener.  He is wrapping up Sherlock S3 this week (WOOT!!) and starts filming The Imitation Game right after Toronto.  But I'm glad he's sneaking a bit of red carpet action in there.  $5 says his hair is both a different cut and color.

But I'm showing restraint (major restraint).  So be proud of me ;)

Many Happy Returns!!

Well, today we celebrate an absolute favorite of mine!  Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch turns 37 today!

My faithful readers already know that I like him and many reasons why.  If you're new or have been living on a desert island and haven't heard of Mr. C or his merits, start with my post for his birthday last year or check out his tag on my blog.  Or read my favorite interview with him to-date (thank you, Caitlin Moran!)

But yes, there is no denying I'm rather fond of the man and his work.  Even were I to try to deny it... the evidence suggests otherwise.
[to be fair... all but one of those was  a gift!]

Yep, I think he's pretty amazing. "Absolutely amazing!  Brilliant!"

[Benedict at 4 days old with parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, July 1976]

[Benedict at Star Trek premiere, May 2013]
36 has been a busy and breakthrough year for him!  The year began (literally on his birthday) with his first Emmy nomination (Sherlock, Season 2); it ended yesterday with another Emmy nomination (Parade's End).  As far as TV goes, he had the aforementioned release of Parade's End, a guest role on The Simpson's, and had a bit of fun just the other week on Top Gear.  He also appeared on several late-night shows including David Letterman's, Jimmy Fallon's, and (my personal favorite) Graham Norton's.  His radio work this year included Season 4 of Cabin Pressure as well as a star-studded production of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere (which will be available later this year - and Gaiman has hopes to make a film version with the same cast ;).  He's been slightly too busy to pursue any serious stage-work this year.  But, of course, the big event of the year was Star Trek: Into Darkness.  It served as a lot of people's introduction to him and he got rather better reviews than the film did.  As a personal aside, I thought he did quite fine - but it wasn't even near his top works.  However, it is just wonderful that he got into his first leading role in a blockbuster.

The past few weeks have served as a fantastic set-up for his 37th year as the final 2 trailers for his 2013 films were released.  This fall, 4 films in which Cumberbatch stars will be hitting the big screen.  A brief rundown:

October 18 - 12 Years a Slave

October 18 - The Fifth Estate

December 13 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

[221B convention]
And, on Christmas Day - August: Osage County

Hopefully we'll also be viewing Sherlock Season 3 before the end of the year (or at least by January 2014).  He did help play a little joke on the Comic-Con panel yesterday - explaining how Sherlock survived the fall:

Ah... cheeky!

As busy and successful and brilliant as he is... my wish for his 37th is actually that he'd be able to take a breather and settle down.  Here's hoping he finds "the right one" - and that this would become a reality:

[Benedict with a friend's newborn... and one of my favorite pics of him ever!]

I'll keep hoping for that.  But in all his ventures and doings I do wish him luck and many happy returns!

Wednesday Creatives: The London Stage comes to Seattle

I need live theatre.  Not just want... I need it.  If I go too long without it I get twitchy!

And I'm not too much of a snob about it; a $5 UW Undergrad production of Macbeth satisfied me just as much as some ventures to 5th Ave.  But, like with Peter and Alice (which I wrote about here & here),  there are times when a production sounds SO good that the quality matters.  That's when I'm so very grateful for the digital age!

Two sources in particular are doing great things to bring London's Stage closer to home:  Digital Theatre and National Theatre Live.

Digital Theatre works with several great theatres - including the RSC, Royal Court, Shakespeare's Globe, and an array of West End productions.  Their site allows you to rent or buy digital copies of these productions.  They have a strong Shakespeare collection, but also several award-winning, contemporary options.   My personal favorite is their modernized Much Ado About Nothing starring David Tennant & Catherine Tate

[This was actually playing when I was in London, but, alas, was sold out]

[Yes - Doctor Who S3 becomes Shakespeare!]
The other, is National Theatre Live.  Beginning with the National Theatre of Great Britain 5 years ago, now extended to several other theatres, NT Live's purpose is to broadcast productions to cinemas around the world - making theatre accessible, while maintaining the collective viewing experience singular to the theatre.  When possible, they broadcast the plays live.  That means going to see a play in Seattle at noon while it is concurrently taking place at an 8 pm showing in London.  100% live.  They do encores as well, where they have recorded productions.

Through NT Live I've seen Danny Boyle's Frankenstein (starring the Olivier Award-Winning pair, Jonny Lee Miller & Benedict Cumberbatch) a few times - and it's returning this Fall!! - as well as Alan Bennett's play People.  They've both been fabulous quality!

Through SIFF, you can catch most NT Live productions.  Some upcoming hilights:  Helen Mirren in The Audience,  Rory Kinnear & Adrian Lester in Othello, and, coming next January, Tom Hiddleston is Coriolanus (!!)

All that to say - London can sometimes feel closer than it actually is.  And there are some surprisingly affordable ways to catch a viewing of some of the greatest actors reciting the greatest lines.

If any of the NT Live showings strike your fancy, leave a comment - maybe we can go together!
